SMALL framework - Method 4: LENS

Using Organizational Storytelling to nourrish & sustain Autotelic Experiences

3 key areas of your enteprise that will reap the benefits of Organizational Storytelling

  1. FOCUS

  2. DEPTH

  3. METHODS

4 things to quest for

  1. Clarity & Practicality

  2. Randomness

  3. Poetic Potential

  4. Usage & Meaningfulness

Where to start ?

In MEETINGS where most entropy is present

1-When talking about Project Strategy (the 5 W’s (who, what, when, where, why) can also be seen as the 5 Acts of the Classic Narrative Structure (Act1 — Exposition, Act2 — Complication, Act3 -Crisis, Act4 — Climax, Act5 — Denouement)

2-When talking about Creative Strategy (finding how we do things together, mapping out the process and living it fully present is a type of story and it connects to all your past and future projects.) The Creative Strategy is influenced by 3 types of Narratives embedded naturally or forcefully by the Organization participants.

  1. Super Storyworld — Intentional Forces (the raw and authentic stories of CEO, CTO, CFO, CMO, CEA, CCO, CSO — Any C-Level Ego)

  2. Macro Stories — Attentional Forces (The business units structure, Team Cultural Diversity, Leadership Models deployed and tolerated, Intellectual & Vocabulary Maturity of the Organization, Project Management maturity)

  3. Micro Narratives — Behavioral (Are there any artefacts, pictorial or Tactile Aid available to facilitate communication process in Narrative, Dialogical Session & Inquiry ? Are there any evidence of support for changemaking and sensemaking in the enteprise ? How easy it is to Jott down an idea on a wall ?)

Micro Narratives should be simple and visible and help the users reach a state of FLOW by promoting a clear Purpose, a will to Master something & to reach Autonomy.

What type of Storytelling Abilities do you have in your company ?

  1. Poetic Disruption: Focus on gently attacking the rust that gets on old useless processes still running because never questionned. A peculiar taste to make fun of silos and denial. POIESIS MEANS “TO MAKE” AND IS THE ROOT OF OUR MODERN “POETRY”. IT WAS FIRST A VERB, AN ACTION THAT TRANSFORMS AND CONTINUES THE WORLD.

  2. Prospective: Focus on future states of your enterprise, markets, business.

  3. Ethnographic: Focus on current and past states of your enterprise, markets and business.

  4. Problem-Solving: Focus on Strategy, Ideation, Design, Engineering daily chores

  5. Sensemaking: Focus on the Internal Relationship between people, data, tools and process

  6. Process Mapping & Journey Mapping: Focus on the visualization of the Forces and Weaknesses of the Services and/or Products Experience the enterprise is providing
