Less is More

LESS is MORE is a popular expression i’ve used to brand an approach i’ve crafted and practiced for 15 years now and it implies 8 forces that when joined together reduce complexity effects on our cognitive processes and allow the human intuition to work at full speed.

The Liminality is the quality of ambiguity and disorientation when you and your team stand at the Threshold (during the middle stage of a change or a ritual). Liminality counter interact with the natural Entropy that engulf in most Social Ecosystems and Physical Body Dynamics.

Together Liminality and Entropy are reinforcing a key attentional mechanism: Saliency is is the state or quality by which some Human Interactions and some Objects/Interfaces stands out relative to its neighbors in order to facilitate Learning.

Like Liminality and Entropy enter a common vortex, Saliency generates the conditions for Serendipity to be detected more frequently. When Serendipity events are detected more often it allows humans to do more with less by enabling accidents of finding something good or useful while not specifically searching for it.

Once you’ve learned how to create something with less you can start sparking your cognitive creativity to do MORE with LESS. But by MORE i refer to the finalities of the SMALL thinking framework which are linked to Intentionality / Intentions. Abundance is a state of mind and Creativity isn’t about problem-solving. Once a problem is well defined, the solution often follows rather directly.

So loose LESS energy generating MORE value is about mastering the art of mediation which is to facilitate information flux, clarifying or re-establishing human relationships. MORE is also about getting into Orbit (into flow) and finding balance between the macrocosmic environments and the microcosmic aspects of our body vital signs. If you are in the Flow but your enterprise isn’t you are in DENIAL not in ORBIT. Then once you’ve set the course of your satellites, your main spaceships and your mothership you can have a look at the technological, sociological and creative REVOLUTIONS ahead in the cosmos in which we all bathes and flex the ELASTICITY of your Curiosity to push forward and discover new ideas and explore new worlds.

Meditation on Business

While conducting a business effort it appeared to me that repeatable results that were aligned with long term goals often arised from a set of decisions about the designed Experience. Those decisions were taken while in true Flow favoring mastery over opinions, autonomy over management, purpose over urgency.

Think for tommorow. Live in the now.

You want your user, fans & customer to find your services & products while they are in the flow. Remember that technological civilizations continually create new needs of consumption, most of which are not important, most of which generate entropy and break the Flow.

Buzyiness is a sign of dementia. Beeing busy is not related to efficiency and it can actually also be anti-productive. If you are creating a service of product that makes you indifferent you are hurting your wakefulness and dimishing your Drive to attain objective results. Do not accumulate knowledge if unecessary and avoid beeing affected by Emotions based on concepts.

If your process to get something done is DULL the product or services emerging from it will be too.

The despair expressed in the execution of something is always felt. Just like when a songwriter compose a new song, a service designer creating a new business process will synthetize Contradictions and Struggles in order to give shape to an physical and psychological experience that creates Flow.

Start by organizing meetings that are Encounters and Retreats. You don’t want your meetings to become a daily chore. You want some meetings to be more Transformational and you want some of them to be more Logistical but they always have to be organized as meaningful rituals.

If you have to think about Short Term tactics because your Revenue Generating strategies aren’t fully working out you should focus on what is important and timely.

Help your clients find the flow. Their flow. That is how you will stay zen.

Using Organizational Storytelling to nourrish & sustain Autotelic Experiences

3 key areas of your enteprise that will reap the benefits of Organizational Storytelling

  1. FOCUS

  2. DEPTH

4 things to quest for

  1. Clarity & Practicality

  2. Randomness

  3. Poetic Potential

  4. Usage & Meaningfulness

Where to start ?

In MEETINGS where most entropy is present

1-When talking about Project Strategy (the 5 W’s (who, what, when, where, why) can also be seen as the 5 Acts of the Classic Narrative Structure (Act1 — Exposition, Act2 — Complication, Act3 -Crisis, Act4 — Climax, Act5 — Denouement)

2-When talking about Creative Strategy (finding how we do things together, mapping out the process and living it fully present is a type of story and it connects to all your past and future projects.) The Creative Strategy is influenced by 3 types of Narratives embedded naturally or forcefully by the Organization participants.

  1. Super Storyworld — Intentional Forces (the raw and authentic stories of CEO, CTO, CFO, CMO, CEA, CCO, CSO — Any C-Level Ego)

  2. Macro Stories — Attentional Forces (The business units structure, Team Cultural Diversity, Leadership Models deployed and tolerated, Intellectual & Vocabulary Maturity of the Organization, Project Management maturity)

  3. Micro Narratives — Behavioral (Are there any artefacts, pictorial or Tactile Aid available to facilitate communication process in Narrative, Dialogical Session & Inquiry ? Are there any evidence of support for changemaking and sensemaking in the enteprise ? How easy it is to Jott down an idea on a wall ?)

Micro Narratives should be simple and visible and help the users reach a state of FLOW by promoting a clear Purpose, a will to Master something & to reach Autonomy.

What type of Storytelling Abilities do you have in your company ?

  1. Poetic Disruption: Focus on gently attacking the rust that gets on old useless processes still running because never questionned. A peculiar taste to make fun of silos and denial. POIESIS MEANS “TO MAKE” AND IS THE ROOT OF OUR MODERN “POETRY”. IT WAS FIRST A VERB, AN ACTION THAT TRANSFORMS AND CONTINUES THE WORLD.

  2. Prospective: Focus on future states of your enterprise, markets, business.

  3. Ethnographic: Focus on current and past states of your enterprise, markets and business.

  4. Problem-Solving: Focus on Strategy, Ideation, Design, Engineering daily chores

  5. Sensemaking: Focus on the Internal Relationship between people, data, tools and process

  6. Process Mapping & Journey Mapping: Focus on the visualization of the Forces and Weaknesses of the Services and/or Products Experience the enterprise is providing
